To participate in the planning and delivery of academic advising/counseling services and programs that promote comprehensive educational opportunities for students.

Responsibilities

  • ACADEMIC ADVISING: Cooperates with faculty, staff, and administrators in providing for academic advising needs of students; provide information to students regarding degree requirements, academic policies, and institutional rules/regulations; provide information to students regarding institutional and community resources that may be useful in pursuit of academic goals and/or personal well-being; maintain student records with consistent academic advising notes in the Advisor Toolkit or Mainframe.
  • STUDENT OUTREACH: Plan and participate in workshops, outreach, college and university-wide programs, new student orientation and graduation ceremonies; assist with other college outreach events when called upon to do so.
  • COMMUNICATION AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Creates reports upon request; attend monthly College Advisor Meetings, committee meetings; participating in office meetings and decision-making; cooperating with other departmental and campus offices; communicating and collaborating with colleagues and supervisor(s); attends and participates in training opportunities including Academic Counseling Association (ACA); identifies/attends classes that bolster skills.
  • COMMITTEE WORK: Member of one or more committees; assist with committee objectives and help ensure the committee meets its goals; take on special projects as requested; attend regular meetings; communicate with other relevant faculty, staff, and students; respond to internal and external inquiries about the program(s); create and update program promotional and informational materials; perform numerous administrative duties specific to the program.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field and four years of experience working with college students in an academic capacity or Master’s degree in a related field and two years of experience in counseling, group work, assessment and administration of student academic programs. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

More than the required years of experience or education. Experience in student affairs or advising at The University of Texas at Austin, or comparable academic advising experience at another institution. Demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Salary Range

$40,000

Working Conditions

  • General office conditions with the majority of time spent in contact with students and student groups during usual office hours. Some evening and weekend work.
