Role scope

The Cobalt Institute (CI) is committed to promoting the responsible and sustainable use of cobalt globally. The Public Affairs and Communications Officer is responsible for communicating The CI’s work and views to a wide range of stakeholders, both internally and externally driving forward communications and increasing external engagement while driving positive change to the benefit of its members and the wider industry.

Key responsibilities

  • Support the activities of the Senior Manager, Government and Public Affairs, and Communications Manager;
  • Work with the Senior Manager, Government and Public Affairs and Communications Manager to position the CI and its programs as driving positive change to the benefit of its members and the wider industry;
  • Drafting content for public affairs campaigns, like letters to global political stakeholders, policy briefing notes, slide decks and policy papers;
  • Drafting press releases and communications for global media, as well as managing social media channels and updating the website;
  • Drafting analyses and of political and policy developments;
  • Drafting regular communications for members;
  • Coordinating the organisation of external meetings and events;
  • Monitoring the political and media landscape in the EU, US and China on behalf of the Institute;
  • Assisting with the successful delivery of events;
  • Ensuring stakeholder databases are maintained and updated regularly;
  • Providing administrative support for the effective running of committees.

Skills and abilities

  • Ability to understand complex issues and communicate clearly and appropriately to a range of audiences;
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent organisational skills;
  • Ability to work under pressure;
  • Experience using IT systems, including Microsoft Office, WordPress and the ability to learn systems like Signal and Borealis;
  • Ability to work individually as well as collaboratively as part of a team;
  • High level of attention to detail;
  • Proven skills in analysing large volumes of information and translating it into appealing advocacy/communications messages;
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is essential and it is desirable to have a knowledge of another EU language.


  • 1-2 years’ experience in the field of politics and communications;
  • Experience working in a policy, public affairs, or political environment;
  • Demonstrable understanding of global political frameworks, including in the EU, US and China;
  • Demonstrable experience drafting communications materials (such as letters of political stakeholders and press releases) in a political context.


  • Degree or equivalent qualifications/experience in a related discipline like politics or communications.

  • Willingness to undertake travel as required;
  • You are a proactive individual, a quick learner and a team player willing to work in a fast-paced political environment.
