The Position: Content Strategist and Developer, DGHR

PADF is looking for a dynamic team member to work closely with the Democracy, Governance and Human Rights (DGHR) team. The selected candidate will be responsible for working with the team to collect technical inputs from experts, field teams, partners and others and helping translate those inputs into coherent technical documents for internal or external use. The selected candidate will be embedded in the DGHR programs team and will be expected to work with programs staff and the new business development team to synthesize information for proposals to donors, publications, internal and external briefings, and other relevant communications materials. The candidate is expected to develop content independently, and to work with others to finalize products.

The successful applicants should have a strong interest in Latin American affairs, as PADF is a vibrant organization where work is focused on the region. Reporting to the Director for Democracy, Governance and Human Rights and working closely with headquarters and field staff, the Communications team, and the New Business Development team. The DGHR Content Strategist will play a contributing role in these priorities:


  • Collect technical content from experts in headquarters, field offices, external experts, or project partners. Manage follow up as necessary.
  • Draft synthesized strategy documents for U.S. government and foundation proposals, publications, project summaries, web content or other documents, based on technical inputs provided.
  • Copy-edit documents produced by other members of the programs team (reports, proposals, publications, etc.) to ensure that they are of high quality. Translate and improve syntax as necessary for comprehension and space requirements.
  • Document organizational learning, success stories and lessons learned.
  • Help build a content strategy, manage timelines for deliverables based on the production calendar for proposals, publications, or campaigns.
  • Manage and build relationships with technical experts for the development of proposals, project materials, publications, etc.
  • Work with 3rd party content creators including graphic designers and writers, providing detailed briefs and outlines to reflect inclusion of the key human rights and governance themes/ideas behind the content.
  • Collaborate with and carry out interviews of key industry thought leaders and internal subject matter experts to develop valuable insights to be used in our content development process.



  • Strategic thinking – Foresee longer-term implications of proposed positions, options and approaches that are not readily apparent. Strategically provide new information or data to key decision makers or stakeholders to influence their understanding and decisions.
  • Communication skills – Must communicate with clarity, completeness, and brevity. Ability to condense and synthesize large amounts of information into concise and concrete language.
  • Execution – identifies needs, develops solutions with stakeholders and sees them through completion.
  • Technology savvy – easily adopts and uses technology, stays current on new digital tools, recommends, and implements technology improvements. Experience using Sharepoint and data visualization, a plus.
  • Organization – ability to structure, systematize, standardize and institutionalize policies and processes across geographies and cultures. Attention to detail.

Personal Characteristics

  • Passion for democratic values and the defense of human rights in Latin America and the Caribbean. Should have a strong interest in subject matters such as civil society capacity development, freedom of expression, democratic processes, anti-corruption, preventing trafficking in persons, labor rights, gender equity, inclusion, or related human rights topics.
  • Curiosity for different cultures – Desire to learn about the contexts where we carry out our work, the conditions in which people live and the challenges and opportunities that the communities we work with face. Understanding of the diverse ways in which individuals engage with their communities and those around them.
  • Independence, energy, commitment to follow through, and passion for social impact – Innate sense of urgency, the drive and perseverance to find opportunities for improvement and get it done. Ability to work independently without requiring heavy supervision. Interest in empowering vulnerable communities in Latin American and the Caribbean and/or nonprofit operations is a plus.
  • Results oriented, committed to the workgroup objectives and contributes to the achievement of goals.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor´s degree in journalism, English, marketing, international relations, international development, or similar; Master’s degree (or equivalent experience) preferred.
  • Impeccable writing and editing skills are essential, including a portfolio of published work.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish.
  • Minimum 5 years in relevant experience (or at least 7 years without a Master’s degree).
  • Experience supporting multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience working in international development is highly desired. Experience with or willingness to learn about U.S. Government donors and funding. Experience contributing to grant-writing or proposals by nonprofit organizations, a plus.
  • Experience living or working in Latin America and the Caribbean, a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collegially with Washington, D.C., and field staff.
