Position Overview

The Director, Assistant Controller will be responsible for directing cash management activities, managing material areas of the balance sheet, overseeing special projects by performing duties personally or through four direct-reporting team members, and providing innovative solutions that fully exploit accounting system capabilities and streamline departmental processes through collaboration with finance staff and other departments.

Major Responsibilities

  1. Assist and support the Controller in directing accounting and financial reporting functions, which includes producing accurate and timely information in the format necessary to aid in management decision-making.
  2. Effectively manage treasury, disbursement and receipt operations including liquidity assurance, accurate and timely preparation of cash projections, communication of cash flow related topics, debt management, receivables, payables, cash balance, timely deposits of funds, and relevant internal control.
  3. Oversee payroll processing and related compliance reporting, including the third-party payroll processor vendor relationship.
  4. Bring transformational ideas to reality to ensure optimal team performance, raising the department’s level of contribution, and adhere to policies.
  5. Share responsibility in leading the month-end and year-end financial close process, including maintaining deadlines, reviewing and posting journal entries within sub-ledgers and general ledger, and performing variance analysis.
  6. Oversee preparation of and review cash account reconciliations and other balance sheet account reconciliations, ensuring timely preparation and issue resolution.
  7. Maintain the chart of accounts and other master data within the accounting system.
  8. Produce reports and queries using latest data query technology.
  9. Develop and maintain departmental policies and policies and associated internal controls, ensuring that staff members are sufficiently trained and cross-trained.
  10. Ensure high level of performance, achievement of ambitious goals, and high-quality results while creating an innovating and continuous improvement focused environment.
  11. Manage the team through motivating staff to achieve peak productivity and performance, monitoring work allocation and performance metrics, reviewing work and providing useful feedback to improve quality; hire, train, supervise, and mentor accounting staff, including coaching and discipline as necessary.
  12. Nurture and maintain collaborative stakeholder relationships throughout the organization, serving as trusted business partner and subject expert in assigned areas; maintain a professional level of conduct, adhere to company code of conduct.
  13. Coordinate external and internal audit requests with stakeholders; oversee Form 990 preparation and filing and other required filings.
  14. Complete and/or oversee special projects as necessary.


Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business or Accounting, or related field required. CPA preferred.

Experience: Minimum of 10 years of experience, with heavy supervisory duties, required.

Computer/Technical Skills:

  • Excellent analytical skills, including advanced Excel and data query tool (BI) techniques.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and familiarity with computer-based accounting packages.
  • Experience with Costpoint a plus.

Communication Skills:

  • Superior communication skills across all mediums communicating with staff and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to tailor communication based on audience required.


Fluent in English required.
