The Opportunity

Reporting to the General Manager of Child & Youth, the Director is considered an integral component in ensuring the relevancy and sustainability of Community Y operations as a reliable, responsive community partner. Through leadership and collaboration with Centre staff ensure sound operational and fiduciary oversight of branch operations with a focus on quality, values-based programming that results in a welcoming, inclusive, consistent Y experience that enhances the achievement of vibrant, healthy communities.

Responsibilities include

  • Support membership growth and retention by ensuring quality member experience and maintained relevancy of the Y in the community. Foster collaborative, service-oriented partnership with staff, volunteers, community members, agencies, and vendors to ensure delivery of responsive, meaningful programming in support of Community Y as a beacon for community.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the Centre in keeping operational objectives and in support of a responsive, reliable programming for participants, families, and community members. Ensure operations are in keeping with quality, safety, and applicable provincial requirements (i.e. insurance, licensing, etc.). Includes: program development and delivery, bookings
  • Responsible for overall health, safety, and sustainability for Community Y facility. Ensure safety and security of participants, staff, volunteers, and visits through establishing and maintaining safety conscious culture. Includes: preventative maintenance, safety inspections, contractor/vendor relationship management, asset management, procurement, lease maintenance, and compliance with applicable safety related acts, regulations, and certification requirements.
  • Ensure consistent, impactful, and diverse breadth of comprehensive and age-specific programming in keeping with YMCA quality, safety, and Child Protection requirements. Support delivery of programming through leadership and collaboration with programming staff and volunteers. Includes: program development and delivery, outcome identification/measurement, evaluation, scheduling, collaboration with internal/external groups, student and volunteer management, etc.
  • Ensure sound fiduciary and administrative practices to support ongoing sustainability of the Centre. Includes: management of day-to-day operational budget, PCI compliance, allocation reporting, petty cash management, expense monitoring, invoicing and Accounts Receivable.
  • Responsible for championing culture of philanthropy in keeping with Association fund development standards and requirement. Includes: promotion/management of YMCA programming, ensure compliance with fundraising standards, participation in events, etc.
  • Provide leadership to Centre staff teams from all operational areas including students and volunteers. Includes: hiring, scheduling, development, and performance management. Ensure fair, equitable, and accessible work environment for all staff through consistent application of Association HR policies, procedures, and processes.
  • Foster culture of sharing and cross-functional collaboration within the Community Y and across other functional areas in the Association. Championing alignment and cooperation of all Y operational units to better impact participant experience (i.e. participant accessibility to Community Y and John W Lindsay YMCA). Timely/meaningful response to internal and external requests for information and concerns (i.e. parents, participants, tenants, community agencies/members, etc.)
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Degree/Diploma in Recreation Management, Human Services, or related field
  • 2-5 years in Member Relations or General Management or equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Previous YMCA experience an asset
  • Proven track record of success in community oriented program delivery
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with demonstrated ability to build relationships and establish rapport
  • Experience in nonprofit sector is an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to meet multiple, competing deadlines
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Advanced computer skills and ability to adapt to new software • Previous YMCA experience considered an asset
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours required
