Purpose for the job:

Join our team to lead the implementation of the output on strengthening UNICEF voice and visibility in AU policy dialogues. The position contributes towards achieving the main outcome of winning support for children at the level of AU institutions. This is a cross-cutting role supporting all technical areas (Child rights and protection, Education and youth development, and Humanitarian Emergencies and resilience building) to communicate effectively with their different stakeholders.

Key functions, accountabilities and related duties/tasks

1. Communication and advocacy strategy

  • Support develop, maintain, and update the Office communication and advocacy strategy and associated work plan.
  • Support develop, maintain, and update the Office annual advocacy calendars linked to AUC and UNICEF priorities.
  • Lead the production of the Office Newsletter. This entails editing articles, branding, formatting, and timely release as per agreed strategy.
  • Lead the production of specific communication products like videos, flyers, web-cards and banners that promote UNICEF visibility at the AUC

2. Media relations and digital communication platforms (Intranet webpage/Twitter)

  • Develop, maintain, and update media relations contact list/database, targeting media with continental reach,
  • Establish, review, and refine processes of communicating with/inviting media in UNICEF AUO events, including press conferences, workshops, symposium etc…
  • Work with portfolio holders to ensure rapid and accurate information dissemination of UNICEF messages and activities to our media contacts and social media followers.
  • Lead in updating the office web page content (intranet and public website)

3. Organization of events and advocacy campaigns

  • Support Office participate in global advocacy activities by integrating them in the annual advocacy calendar and disseminating key messages in our different social media platforms.
  • Support the portfolio holders in the planning and delivering online and offline events. This could involve, branding presentations and communication materials, hosting the meeting platforms (zoom/MS Teams etc…)
  • Keep the office informed of global advocacy campaign priorities.

4. Networking and partnerships

  • Work with portfolio holders to maintain and update an email contact list/database of the Office key stakeholders to facilitate dissemination of UNICEF key messages.
  • Establish, and maintain strong working relationships with Communication Departments/Units from key partners, notable the AU Commission, UNECA, and other UN Agencies working with the African Union.
  • Support portfolio holders to maintain effective partnerships with relevant stakeholders by timely sharing UNICEF knowledge products.
  • Maintain close working relationship with Regional and HQ Communication colleagues for effective overall coordination.

5. Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Monitor and evaluate the use and effectiveness of media materials and share results and findings.
  • Produce monthly analytics on Office social media and website engagement.
  • Lead in the preparation of the Office customer/stakeholders’ satisfaction survey on annual basis
  • Contribute in the preparation of Office annual reports by facilitating editing and branding

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • university degree (Bachelors or higher) in  Journalism, Sociology of Communication, International Relations, Political Science, or another relevant technical field.
  • A minimum of 2[Two] years of relevant professional experience at  at the national or international levels in journalism, Social campaign management or Social media Management.
  • Proven experience in conducting extensive advocacy campaigns
  • Excellent computer skills: experience with digital communications strategy, including social media, email, and website management.
  •  

    Work experience and/or familiarity with a continental Organizations is considered an additional advantage.

  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.

Competencies:

  • Excellent presentation skills.
  • Excellent writing skills in English and ability to work with more than one AU official language would be an added advantage
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Excellent social media skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently and structured in a team under time pressure and under difficult circumstances.

    Ability to build strong relationships internally and with external actors.
