Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Political Affairs Section in the Sana’a Office of the Office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General to Yemen (OSESG-Yemen). The Political Affairs Officer will be based in Sana’a, Yemen, and will report to the Senior Political Affairs Officer in the Sana’a Office/Head of Office.
Responsibilities The Political Affairs Officer supports in the implementation of the Special Envoy’s key mandate, including the provision of facilitation and technical advice to consultations on a peace agreement, outreach to political parties and civil society and the restoration of state institutions, political dialogue, and subsequent support to implementation. More specifically, the Political Affairs Officer will focus on supporting the work of the Sana’a office to assist the Yemen’s peace process.
Within the limits of delegated authority, the incumbent will be responsible for performing the following duties:
•Support and organize operational activities related to the work of the office i.e. political and governance-related issues, civil society support work, etc.;
•Pursue an integrated approach that includes a rights-based dimension, conflict prevention sensitivity, and a gender perspective into the policy, planning and operational activities of the office;
•Prepare and review analytical reports, briefing notes and talking points, as well as advice on assigned issues to senior leadership. Prepares responses to comments, statements, and queries of parties and manages operations involving several components of a limited nature.
•Develop and maintain relations with government officials, non-state armed groups and other national stakeholders at the working levels and advises them on issues and policies of mutual concern;
•Assist in planning, coordinating and supporting programmes, projects and activities requiring mission and/or interagency involvement and participation. Represents the team at round tables, seminars and conferences;
•Provide substantive support to the Head of Office in the formulation of the programme of work, budget and medium-term plan of the unit by actively participating in or leading meetings, drafting major components and compiling or researching issues related to the mission;
•Assists in the management of the office as required and support team members on various files as needed.
•Performs other related duties as required.

Education An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Law, Political Science, Management or Development, or a related field is required. A first level university degree with a combination of two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area is required.
Experience in political outreach, facilitation, analysis and reporting is desirable, with at least one year experience working in a conflict or post conflict setting.
Experience working in the Middle East is desirable.
Experience managing teams is desirable.
Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required; Fluency in Arabic is desirable.
Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
