The Miami Institute for Data Science and Computing (IDSC) has an exciting job opportunity for a Scientist in Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning to work at the Coral Gables Campus.

CORE JOB SUMMARY                                                                                     

The Scientist, Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning has the primary role of initiating new collaborations and projects with the UM research community, other academic institutions and with industry. The Scientist supports the University’s research goals and objectives by engaging in complex experiments and investigations in a range of areas, depending on specialty and interests. Moreover, an employee in this position contributes to the scientific community and promotes the University’s reputation as a leader in the field.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                                   

  • Initiates, designs, and leads data science projects.

  • Oversees research employees, students, and other relevant staff.

  • Authors scientific publications, technical and agency reports, and patent applications.

  • Assists in the development of training materials for research staff.  

  • Plans experiments and records and analyzes findings.

  • Prepares research proposals and funding applications.

  • Assists investigators with writing methods and results sections of grants and research manuscripts.

  • Ensures that all activities are in compliance with applicable quality and regulatory standards.

  • Maintains current knowledge of relevant scientific and technical developments.

  • Presents ongoing work and findings to colleagues at academic conferences.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                                                                                

Education:

Ph.D. in computer science, engineering, machine learning, data science, or related field is required

Experience:

Minimum of 10 years of academic research and business consulting experience is required. Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience and/or certifications may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Ability in setting up and leading data science projects at the technical level, both in academic and in industrial setting and in performing independent scientific research.

  • Skill in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data.

  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.

  • Must have excellent writing skills with a proven track record of publications in respected journals.

  • Must have teaching experience in research level topics.

Department Specific Functions

The Institute for Data Science and Computing AI and ML Scientist has the primary role of initiating new collaborations and projects with the UM research community, other academic institutions, and with industry to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Optimization techniques to provide data-driven solutions to real world problems.

Responsibilities:

The Scientist:

  • Designs, experiments, develops and implements novel AI/ML algorithms using a variety of datasets.

  • Collaborates with other scientists and engineers and together develop novel methods that combine cutting edge AI with expert domain knowledge.

  • Collaborates with IDSC’s software engineering team to design and implement AI platforms and scientific software solutions.

  • Publishes high impact research in peer reviewed journals.

  • Develops new ideas and proposals to expand the AI and ML program.

  • Mentors staff, postdocs, and students.

  • Interacts with the larger AI community by attending conferences or workshops.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Expertise of programming in Python, R, C++, Java, Scala, OCaml, Rust, Go, etc. and using the Deep Learning tools such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, etc.

  • Expertise in using Big Data platforms and tools, including Hadoop, Pig, Hive, Spark, and MapReduce. 

  • Deep understanding of data modeling and relational databases.

  • Broad knowledge of common machine learning frameworks, 

  • Knowledge of distributed computing frameworks (e.g. Spark, Dask, Ray).

  • Excellent understanding of service-oriented architectures

  • Knowledge of common frameworks for analytical applications (e.g. R/Shiny, Dash, H2O Wave

  • Ability to apply predictive models, and utilize natural language processing using massive data sets

  • Good verbal and written communication skills, as well as interpersonal skills, with the ability to conceptualize and communicate designs and plans, develop partnerships and collaborate with other researchers and industry partners.

  • Desire to be proactive and focus on continuous improvement, resulting in a culture of high performance.
