The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is the world’s largest humanitarian agency, fighting hunger worldwide. In India, World Food Programme (WFP) has been working since 1963, contributing to food and nutrition security of the people in general and vulnerable population and communities such as women and children, in particular. WFP’s work in India is fully focused on country capacity strengthening to support access to food and reducing malnutrition towards Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG) 2 on zero hunger, while also focusing on SDG 17 to support partnerships for the goals. 
The World Food Programme India Country Office (WFP) is engaged in strategic and technical collaboration with the Development Monitoring and Evaluation Office (DMEO), NITI Aayog, Government of India. As part of the collaboration, WFP is supporting the DMEO to undertake a comprehensive assessment of the food security and nutrition sector in India, in order to provide evidence-based insights for key stakeholders. The objectives for WFP as part of the comprehensive assessment are:
•    To collect, collate, synthesize, and succinctly present the existing evidence and data on food security and nutrition sector, its related policies, schemes/programmes, by conducting a comprehensive review of secondary literature and analysis of secondary data including national survey datasets and administrative data.
•    To support in designing and implementing a nationwide large-scale household sample survey on food security and nutrition, including support for drafting research questions and relevant design, methodology, sampling approach, analytical plan, interview schedules, quality assurance during data collection, data validation, analysis of the primary quantitative data, and reporting.
The assessment is being co-led by DMEO and WFP. WFP is hiring a quantitative research analyst to support in large-scale secondary and primary data collection, collation, analysis, reporting and dissemination related work. The quantitative research analyst will work closely with the WFP staff positioned at DMEO under the overall supervision of Head, Evidence and Results Unit, WFP India CO.


Under the direct supervision of the Head, Evidence and Results Unit, the position will be responsible for technical work and support the team in taking forward the comprehensive nationwide assessment of the food and nutrition security sector. He/she independently handles wide range of specialized programme, policy, research and analytical activities. The key  responsibilities are as follows:

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

•    Support the DMEO and other stakeholders in the development of quantitative tools and instruction manuals for data collection from pan-India.
•    Assist in developing a robust sampling methodology for the primary household and facility survey(s).
•    Assist in pre-testing, piloting, and refinement of interview schedules and check the quality of digital/CAPI tools.
•    Assist in imparting training to the field staff for data collection.
•    Assist in monitoring the quality of data being collected from the field.
•    Assist in developing the quantitative analysis plan based on primary data collected from the field.
•    Conduct key informant interviews with government and non-government stakeholders during data collection as required.
•    Support in data analysis, including descriptive and inferential analysis using modern statistical and infographic tools.
•    Support in drafting of various reports, presentations, and other dissemination documents.
•    Support in organizing expert meetings, consultations, workshops, etc., with various stakeholders as required.
•    Continuously keep a track of and undertake analysis of secondary/ national level datasets related to food security and nutrition sector such as NSS, NFHS, CNNS, scheme/programme administrative data, etc.
•    Other as required


•    Demonstrates excellent knowledge about food security and nutrition issues, and is familiar with government policies and data sets on food security nutrition.
•    Demonstrated ability to design, conduct and monitor large-scale nationwide household sample surveys.
•    Demonstrates strong ability to analyse, visualize and interpret large-scale pan-India data to generate policy insights. 
•    Capacity to communicate effectively orally and in written formats to a variety of audiences.
•    A natural discussion partner for both younger and more established academics
•    Works effectively and collaboratively in support of building a team-based culture of work;


•    To provide coordination and specialized technical support in quantitative data collection and analysis to WFP and DMEO team and support in execution of the assessment of food and nutrition security sector. 


Completion of secondary school education. Graduation in Economics, Demography/Population Studies, Social Science, Food Security and Nutrition or other field relevant discipline is desirable. 

Minimum seven or more years of progressively responsible work experience in conducting large-scale data collection and analysis in the field of food security, nutrition, poverty, livelihood, health and related areas. It includes undertaking various planning, monitoring, analytical and infographic work using modern analytical software such as R Studio/Python/Stata/SPSS. Experience in writing clearly the analytical findings in the form of report and policy briefs. 

High level of proficiency with MS office package. Knowledge of data visualization tool such as Tableau and Power BI and geospatial tools such as QGIS, ArcGIS etc. will be given preference.

Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Working knowledge of Hindi is preferred.

Mode of Engagement: The salary for this position is INR. 1,181,902 per annum, plus medical benefits as per WFP’s plan. All tax liability for payments from this contract will be borne by the subscriber. Qualified candidates will be retained on roster for at least two years and may be considered for future similar vacant posts.
