Overview :

The Ministry of Water Resources in partnership with MCLIMES, a project under UNDP, are implementing a project which aims at collecting climate data and disseminating information to the public. The project has a Flood Control Room (FCR) at the Department of Water Resources in Tikwere House in City Centre. To have the Flood Control system run effectively, the Department installed a backup system, however, there are still challenges of power failure in the Flood Control Room. It is against this background, that MCLIMES project management requested that UNDP energy team do an energy load assessment for the Flood Control Room in Tikwere House.

After conducting load assessment, the team also did possible system design for the backup power. From load assessment it was found that total power from equipment available is 16.77Kw, with 134.19KWh total power consumption for a period of 8 hours. Using 48V systems voltage it was found that 2796Ah battery capacity will manage to offer 8 hours backup power.  System design option have been provided in section 4 of this report. The rooftop solar mount was considered as possible option for installing solar panels based on 121.5 m2 surface area available which has capacity to accommodate 72 solar panels of 320 Watts with 1.666mx1.002m panel dimension. However, the designed system only needs 71.06m2 of space for the panel installation.
