3 Good News Stories You May Have Missed in June

As we close out another month and approach the midway day of 2016, it is a great time to take a breather and reflect on the progress of those working in the social good space have been making. These stories give us hope that, despite the challenges we face, we are making strides in the right directions to make the world a more environmentally friendly, healthy, and culturally acceptant place.

Here are three good news stories that you may have missed on your feed this June.

1. 2015: A Record Year for Renewables
On June 1, REN21 released its annual Renewables Global Status Report, which found that in 2015, “Renewable power generating capacity saw its largest increase ever, with an estimated 147 gigawatts (GW) added.” It also noted that 2015 saw record investments in renewables – totaling $286 billion – and that renewables are cost-competitive with fossil fuels in many markets.

2. June Marked the End of Ebola Transmission in Guinea
On June 1, the World Health Organization declared the end of Ebola virus transmission in the Republic of Guinea. WHO and its partners are continuing their work with the governments of Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea to monitor flare ups and to ensure that survivors have access to the appropriate health care, counseling, and educational services they need.

3.Refugee Olympic Team to Shine Spotlight on Worldwide Refugee Crisis
On June 3, the International Olympic Committee announced the 10 refugee athletes who will compete in the Olympic Games Rio 2016 this summer as part of the first-ever Refugee Olympic Team. “Their participation in the Olympics is a tribute to the courage and perseverance of all refugees in overcoming adversity and building a better future for themselves and their families,” said UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi.
