Over the last two weeks, our sister organization the Better World Campaign partnered with the ONE Campaign and CARE to host Global Oval – a pair of foreign policy summits during the Democratic National Convention and the Republican National Convention. The goal of these events was to bring international development and foreign affairs to the forefront of the convention conversations – and we succeeded!
The summits engaged two former governors, eleven Members of Congress, military leaders and many others in substantial conversations on global health, the refugee crisis, food security, energy access, education, security, and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
Here are three key themes we heard throughout the Global Oval summits:
1. Investing in international development is vital to U.S. national security interests, and it must continue to be a priority of the next administration.
2. Global health and development remains a bipartisan issue and the legacy of the Bush Administration’s work, especially the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) remains very important.
3. Investing in girls and women is central to achieving all of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
