International Day of Charity: 5 Ways to Get Involved

Eva Schafer, Permanent Mission of Hungary to the UN

On September 5, the first International Day of Charity will be commemorated at the UN Headquarters in New York. The idea of the international day was proposed by Hungary with the goal of creating a universal platform to raise awareness about the importance of benevolent giving.

The events in New York will feature panel discussions on the role of charity in poverty alleviation and in promoting access to clean water and sanitation with distinguished speakers from the philanthropic world, including the UN Foundation.

We encourage individuals and organizations worldwide to use this opportunity to promote their own projects and encourage charitable activities in their communities.
Here are 5 ways to get involved:

Organize a funding campaign for a special purpose – The day is a great opportunity to promote your existing campaign or raise funding for a new one.

Hold an event in your community – Celebrate the day by organizing your own event on September 5.

Reward good deeds – Establish a symbolic award in your community for individuals and/or organizations who lead by example when it comes to charity, philanthropy, or volunteerism.

Join the conversation on Facebook and Twitter – Share your ideas and promote your own initiatives on our social media platforms. Follow the events via live webcast and ask questions from the panelists. Don’t forget to use #charityday and #charitydayun in your posts!

Share with us what charity means to YOU! – Charity can take various shapes and forms in different parts of the world. Share your stories and pictures on Facebook and Twitter.
