Context:
UN Women, the United Nations Entity Entity for the Equality and Empowerment of Women is working in collaboration with governments, United Nations organizations, civil society organizations and other institutions to find solutions to violence against women and girls.
In Senegal, despite the efforts made by the government, violence against women and girls has high prevalence rates.According to the latest study published by the National Agency for Statistics and Demography, Senegal generates a rate of 31.9% of violence.Regarding female genital mutilation, the proportion is 20.1% for women aged between 15 and 49 and 12.9% for those under the age of 15.The early marriage rate is 12% for girls under the age of 15.
The country continues to deal with major challenges linked to gender inequalities and gender -based violence (VBG), compromising the full participation of women and girls in the development of the country.According to the national VBG survey of 2024, carried out by the ANSD in collaboration with UNU women, the UNFPA and the UNDP, the rates of violence remain high in the 7 regions, ranging from 17.7 % to 38 %.The Dakar region presents the highest rate (38 %), in a context of rapid urbanization, promiscuity, environmental degradation (advance of the sea, scarcity of resources) and economic land areas, particularly in peri -urban areas.In Ziguinchor (17.7 %), the consequences of the Casamançais conflict persist, affecting women’s access to care, education and economic opportunities.The regions of Tambacounda (27.5 %), Sédhiou (29 %), Kolda (23.5 %), Kédougou (21.4 %) and Matam (28.6 %) share some characteristics: strong social inequalities, geographic isolation, impacts of climate change, the persistence of MGFs, the porosity of border areas, standardization and non -denunciation of violence,Natural and predominance of the informal economy with low incomes from traditional economic activities, without forgetting the exposure to the sexual exploitation of women in gold panning sites in Kédougou … In all of these areas, women encounter structural obstacles that limit their access to basic social services and slow down their economic empowerment.These realities require a contextualized and integrated approach to effectively combat VBG, promote gender equality and strengthen women’s resilience.
The projectsupport for the elimination of violence: a perspective of empowerment,Funded by Global Affairs Canada and Piloted by UN Women aims to contribute to the reduction of gender -based violence and gender inequalities in regions where they are the most prevalent but also to strengthen the rights of women and girls to promote their full participation in development.
This project will take place in 7 regions (Dakar, Matam, Tambacounda, Kédougou, Kolda, Sédhiou, and Ziguinchor) for a period of 7 years.
As part of the implementation, operational strategies will be identified in order to strengthen the legal framework, the supply of quantitative and qualitative services, also strengthen prevention through a change in behavior of target populations by setting up information, education and communication activities (IEC) and communication for behavior change (CCC).
An in-depth socio-anthropological study through a participatory approach is therefore necessary to complete quantitative information.
The study will identify the socio-economic and cultural determinants of communities.
These reference terms concern the socio-anthropological study on the determinants which influence violence against women and girls it will have a triple objective (i) favor a betterunderstanding of social normsin project intervention areas;(ii) serve asStrategic advocacy leverIn order to raise awareness among decision -makers and partners about the challenges linked to protection, to which women and girls face in the 7 regions of intervention, namely:Mambicocounding, the Kodou, Sédhiou, Kdada, Ziguinchor and Dakar.(iii)Orient public policies towards concrete and adapted actions,thus promoting their protection and safety, their empowerment and the improvement of their living conditions.
For this, UN Women is recruiting 7 consultants for a period of 4 months in order to carry out, each, a socio-anthropologist study of violence against women and harmful practices in one of the 7 regions of intervention according to their profile.
Under the responsibility of the managers of the program to eradicate violence against women and girls, and in close collaboration with the team of the Senegal Bureau the consultant will be responsible for carrying out a socio-anthropological study of violence against women and girls in one of the 7 regions of intervention, namely:Mambicocounding, the Kodou, Sédhiou, Kdada, Ziguinchor and Dakar.
Main functions and responsibilities
Evaluate the socio-anthropological dimension of violence against women and girls, including harmful practices;
Identify key factors, socio-cultural and anthropological barriers and analyze these socio-cultural determinants and these community dynamics
Identify representations and practices as well as the factors that influence the use of traditional medicine
Identify the approaches and mechanisms that the community would like the project to put in place to prevent VBG
Analyze the determinants of the vulnerability of women and girls, by identifying the socio-cultural, economic and environmental factors which limit their empowerment.
Examine the state of the care services (health, security, legal, psychosocial), their accessibility and their impact in the fight against gender -based violence;
Study the cartography of actors, coordination executives and current projects in the fight against violence of women.

Functional skills:
Know how to conduct or direct monographs, sociological and anthropological studies in the regions of Senegal.
Ability to collect using processing and analyzing the qualitative and quantitative data of research in the social sciences;
Create, edit and present information in clear and presentable formats, using appropriate computer features.
Creativity and artistic sense.
Understanding of the principles of research methodology in the social sciences, taking into account the cultural and religious sensitivity of communities;

Qualifications required:
Education et Certification:
Master in sociology or cultural anthropology, or in a related area required.
A development in development project, combined with two additional years of qualifying experience can be accepted in place of the higher university diploma.
Experience:
At least (5) years of relevant professional experience in the fields of research in social sciences, particularly in sociology or anthropology.
Updated and in -depth knowledge of Senegalese society, belief systems, social organization, family structuring etc
