Position Overview

In order to be successful for this role, the applicant, must be a State Enrolled Community Health Nurse (SECHN) or a WASSCE graduate with CSSD training. The CSSD technician will ensure that all surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment used at KGH are properly decontaminated, inspected, assembled, sterilized, and stored according to established protocols.

This is a NATIONAL position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Receive, sort, and disassemble contaminated instruments and equipment

Perform meticulous cleaning and decontamination procedures following established protocols and observing universal precautions

Ensure all instruments are free of bioburden before moving to the preparation area

Inspect instruments for cleanliness, function and damage

Accurately assemble surgical instrument sets and trays according to established checklists

Properly wrap, package and label instrument sets and supplies using appropriate sterilization containers or wraps

Operate and monitor the autoclaves in accordance with manufacturer instructions and departmental protocol

Perform and document required biologic and chemical monitoring tests, ensuring all parameters for sterilization are met.

Document sterilization cycles accurately and maintain complete records

Aseptically handle and store sterile supplies in the sterile storage area

Accurately fill and deliver sterile supplies to the operating room and other parts of the hospital

Manage inventory, monitor expiration date and report supply shortages

Adhere to all hospital, departmental infection control policies and procedures

Maintain a clean and organized work environment

Participate in quality assurance and performance improvement activities

Utilizing Instrument Tracking System and Surgical Services Scheduling System (PIMS), as necessary

Assist in the training of new sterilization technicians

All duties must comply with the Sierra Leone National IPC Guidelines (2021), WHO Sterilization & Decontamination Standards, and AORN Central Sterile Processing recommended practices.

Other duties as delegated to you by your line manager that fall within the scope of work and role level.

Education and work experience requirements

Qualification should be SECHN (preferred) or WASSCE Pass in English and Maths

Undergone sterile processing training (required)

Previous experience working in the CSSD (preferred)

Knowledge of cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization techniques

Having undergone IPC training is an added advantage

Previous experience in the operating theatre or Surgical ward is an added advantage

Ability to follow verbal and/or written instructions

Must be able to lift, stand, and stoop without physical restriction

Conscientious in detail and grooming

Ability to communicate effectively and pleasantly

Thorough knowledge of aseptic technique, sterilization techniques, infection control requirements, and a basic knowledge of medical/surgical procedures and terminology
