Job Summary Bowdoin College is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Accountant to join our Controller’s office. Reporting to the Director of Accounting and Financial Reporting, the Accountant will be responsible for assisting with various accounting functions, including year end audit schedule, monthly general ledger closing schedule, reconciliations, journal entries, review of restricted fund transactions, and completion of gift revenue related tasks. This position offers an excellent opportunity for a motivated professional to contribute to the financial management and stewardship of the College.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Complete bank and balance sheet account reconciliations monthly or quarterly, as applicable. Communicate independently with campus partners for resolution of accounting issues. 
  • Process daily gift receipts and work closely with the Associate Controller and the Development and Alumni Relations office to ensure transactions are recorded properly. 
  • Monitor stock gift activity daily and communicate key data to internal constituents. Complete sale of stocks as appropriate. 
  • Review invoices related to restricted  funds (endowment, department & faculty reserves, student activities, and agency funds). Work closely with campus partners to ensure transactions are recorded properly. 
  • Assist the Controller and Director of Accounting and Financial Reporting, as needed, providing ad hoc analysis and reports. Contribute to special projects and initiatives as assigned by the Director of Accounting and Financial Reporting, Controller, or senior leadership.

  • The salary Range for this position is expected to be: $59,000 – $65,000.

Education/Skills Requirements Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (or demonstrated equivalent experience).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Advanced level Excel skills)
  • Experience with financial reporting, general ledger maintenance, and budget analysis.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management abilities.
  • Commitment to accuracy, integrity, and confidentiality in handling financial information.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines.

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with accounting software
Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents Required:

  • Minimum of 1-3 years of relevant accounting experience with a Bachelor’s degree (or 5-7 years experience in an accounting environment with a high school diploma or GED equivalent).
  • The successful candidate will be subject to a criminal history background check, education verification, and credit check.

Preferred:

  • Prior experience in an accounting, higher education, or nonprofit environment.
  • Prior experience using Workday
Standard Work Days and Hours
  • Monday – Friday working between the hours of 8:00 am – 5:30 pm, as scheduled with supervisor.
  • Full-time, year round (1.00 FTE), this position will be on-site in Brunswick, Maine.
  • This is an exempt position requiring time commitments necessary to satisfactorily complete job requirements.
