Are you ready to embark on a unique professional journey in one of the most dynamic and prestigious workplaces in Lima? The British Embassy in Lima is seeking a highly motivated Intern to support its day-to-day operations. This is a fascinating role and provides an excellent opportunity to gain experience working for a major diplomatic mission in Peru. You will gain hands-on experience in embassy activities, develop professional and diplomatic skills, and contribute to the Mission’s objectives. You must be enrolled in an undergraduate programme or recently graduated (e.g. Executive/Business Administration, Accountancy, and/or similar)

In this role you will provide support to the Deputy Head of Mission (DHM) in the British Embassy Lima and administrative support to the Corporate Services Team (CST) finance objectives.
A core part of the job is coordination and running logistics for the Deputy Head of Mission, from meeting coordination to personal transport. That means there is administrative work – but done well it’s about prioritisation and communication, including with external and internal stakeholders at a high level. This is about understanding our strategy and helping deliver it through organising, prioritising and challenging as an assistant to the DHM. In addition, the successful applicant will contribute to the financial objectives of the Corporate Services Team by providing administrative support in financial management—this includes processing utility and contractor invoices, verifying financial data, assisting with accounts and payslips, managing IGV claims, and supporting the Finance Assistant through regular monitoring and reporting.

With the support of your line manager, you will be expected to carry out tasks including:

Executive Assistance (20%)

  • Lead the diary and transport arrangements for the Deputy Head of Mission (DHM), from meeting scheduling and daily logistics, to planning longer-term engagement with a range of different stakeholders across the Embassy’s portfolio.
  • Provide a secretariat function and communication support for specific cross-embassy committees and initiatives, including the Crisis Committee and corporate messaging.
  • Support the Chief of Staff’s office on event management on a wide variety of embassy priorities.

Accounting Support (50%)

  • Efficiently receive, review, and process utility and contractor invoices, verifying financial data to ensure accurate and timely maintenance of records, trackers, and costs evolution charts.
  • Provide administrative support in financial management tasks, including accounts, payslips, IGV claims and other pay-related tasks for the Embassy.
  • Support the Finance Assistant and Deputy Head of CST by monitoring financial activities and preparing regular reports.

Team Support (20%)

  • Provide wider support to other members of the team as required.
  • Translation of documents. Digitalise paper records and file documents, recording in Excel.
  • Participate in Post crisis activities and any other ad-hoc embassy Activities.
  • Actively engage in corporate initiatives that foster a culture of fairness, inclusion, and continuous improvement, contributing to a more supportive and equitable workplace at the Embassy.

Learning and Development (10%)

  • Attend learning and development events.
  • Identify skills and development opportunities for professional growth.
  • Actively participate in performance appraisal process and take responsibility from timely feedback.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • Good organisational skills are crucial, with strong attention to detail. Successful candidates will be required to support the organisation of strategic meetings.
  • Interest in nourishing interpersonal communication skills, including collaborating and partnering with others, and understanding other actor’s perspectives with empathy and patience.
  • We look forward for applicants with a desire to learn. We expect applicants to share their skills with the team and be confident in expressing their ideas.
  • Language: proficient/confident in English & Spanish. You will contribute to meetings, facilitate meetings and to produce written communication in a good standard of English.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office: Word, Excel and PPT.

Applicants must be eligible to live and work in Peru in their own right at the time of application.

The successful candidate will be subject to a security clearance and professional reference checks

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.

Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list. If during the reserve period of 6 months the same or largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.

The jobholder will receive training according to the role, have full access to the UK Diplomatic Academy and online training resources and will be encouraged to take full advantage of both formal and informal learning events as and when available and relevant.

The FCDO also has mandatory training that all staff members need to complete.

Working patterns:

30 hours per week, from Monday to Friday. The Embassy has core hours during which staff are expected to work from the office, but there is flexibility to enable applicants to complete their studies, and it is normally possible to accommodate up to two days remote working in coordination with the line manager.
