The British Diplomatic Missions in Brussels are part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas, and are now recruiting for an Events & Policy Traineeship, for the Scottish Government EU Office in Scotland House Brussels.
The Scottish Government EU Office is offering an exciting opportunity for a period of 6 to 11 months for this Events & Policy Traineeship with the chance to gain professional experience in Brussels develop your skills and experience across a range of areas.
You will work closely with the Events and Visits Manager to help organise our core annual programme of events. You will also support the delivery of additional events held at the Scotland House Conference Centre and at external venues, both online and in person.
This role will also assist with coordinating Ministerial and senior stakeholder visits to Brussels, including managing weekly visitors to Scotland House.
This role will support the Scottish Government’s four core policy priorities for 2025–2026, with a focus on sustainability and economic growth. They will also support and promote the work to grow Scotland’s economy through innovation, investment, and business support.
Main purpose of this traineeship:
- Work with the Events Team to organise key cultural diplomacy events, including ordering catering and other supplies, drafting, issuing and monitoring invitations;
- Support the work of policy teams across various policy areas:
- To monitor and gain insight into EU policy developments using both open-source material and contacts with key stakeholders;
- To update SG policy colleagues and Ministers in Scotland;
- To promote Scotland’s achievements and seek to foster opportunities for collaboration to tackle shared challenges;
- To deliver policy-themed events in support of all the things above.
- Assist in organising Ministerial and senior stakeholder visits to Brussels and engagement with the EU Institutions and Brussels-based networks and partners;
- Support the coordination and welcoming of visitors to Scotland House Brussels, ensuring a smooth experience;
- Attend external meetings (online and in person) to provide reports and updates to colleagues.
Essential qualifications, skills and experience
- Full professional proficiency in English (written and spoken, CEFR* level C1 or higher)
- University degree
- A keen interest in EU/European policy and an understanding of the EU institutions and processes
- Ability to prioritise workload effectively and deliver to tight deadlines
- Strong communication, interpersonal and team working skills
- Good research, writing and strong IT skills including use of Microsoft Office
- Interest in and passion for European policy and promoting Scotland.
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
- French, Dutch or other language skills would be an asset
- Relevant academic/work/voluntary experience
- Experience in supporting or organising events

Other benefits and conditions of employment
These are full-time professional immersion traineeships with a duration from 6 to 11 months with a starting date to be discussed between the parties, 36.25 hours net for 5 working days a week.
The professional immersion indemnity for this position is €1.300. Additional benefits including commute refund and luncheon vouchers of €8 per workday are also provided and commute refunds for public transport.
This traineeship provides a professional immersion outside of any educational programme. Therefore, no paperwork with a university or school can be signed.
Trainees have access to 1 day of paid annual leave and 1 day of unpaid leave per month of Traineeship.
Please note that Belgian nationals will be paid their salary gross and are expected to comply with their tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Belgian authorities. Non-Belgian nationals will receive their salary net, minus the deduction of an equivalent level of Belgian tax retained at source. Further information on this will be given to candidates during the recruitment process.
Please be advised that the British Diplomatic Missions will not be able to meet the travel costs incurred when travelling to the interview, nor the costs connected with relocation if offered an Traineeship offer.
Professional Immersion Traineeship Requirements:
- Be a minimum of 18 years old;
- Proof of valid medical coverage for the period of the Traineeship (European/Global Health Insurance Card).
Staff recruited locally by the British Diplomatic Missions in Belgium are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Belgian employment law.
The successful candidates will be subject to professional background checks and security clearance;
Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Belgium and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
