In this role, you will drive advocacy at EU level to ensure animal welfare is integrated into European funding mechanisms, while also empowering our member organisations to leverage financing opportunities at national level.

Eurogroup for Animals is the pan-European animal protection organisation which unites the voices of leading national and international organisations. We work to improve the welfare of as many animals as possible by leading and delivering coordinated advocacy and campaigns at European level. Eurogroup for Animals uses its knowledge and expertise to challenge EU decision makers and bring about positive change. By uniting our members and working together we magnify national activities to get our message across at European level. Eurogroup for Animals is a founding member of the World Federation for Animals (WFA), our global sister organisation.

Eurogroup for Animals’ farm animal programme aims at reducing suffering of animals on farms by advocating for transformational change of our farming systems, shifting toward more humane, sustainable food production.

Purpose of the role

As Political Adviser – Farm Animals, you will drive advocacy at EU level to ensure animal welfare is integrated into European funding mechanisms, while also empowering our member organisations to leverage financing opportunities at national level. The successful candidate will play a key role in translating economic evidence into policy influence and practical action across the EU.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead EU-level lobbying to integrate animal welfare into EU funding instruments and criteria;
  • Develop evidence-based advocacy messages in collaboration with the economist;
  • Engage with institutional stakeholders and relevant industry actors;
  • Develop and implement targeted lobbying strategies to influence key EU policymakers and stakeholders on identified funding files;
  • Work closely with the in-house economist to develop strong, evidence-based advocacy materials and financing messages;
  • Coordinate with the Food Policy Lead to ensure timely information-sharing from Brussels and contribute to building training programmes for member organisations;
  • Empower member organisations to seize financing opportunities at national and local levels by raising awareness, building capacity, and supporting stakeholder engagement;
  • Collaborate with the Industry Lead to ensure outreach to farmers’ organisations and other relevant stakeholders, increasing awareness of available funding pathways.

Person specification

Essential Skills & Qualifications

  • Proven experience in EU-level lobbying and public affairs, particularly within EU institutions;
  • Strong understanding of EU financing mechanisms, preferably including the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and related instruments;
  • Confidence in engaging with policymakers on complex legislative and financial files;
  • Ability to translate technical economic and policy analysis into persuasive advocacy messages;
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and relationship-building skills;
  • Strong coordination skills and ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional team;
  • Resilient nature and ability to handle stress and higher workload periods at times, as well as changing environments;
  • Fluency in English (additional EU languages are an asset).

Desirable skills

  • Experience working on agriculture, food policy, sustainability, or animal welfare issues;
  • Familiarity with European Investment Bank instruments and other EU-level public/private financing mechanisms;
  • Experience working with membership-based organisations or networks;
  • Understanding of national-level policy processes in one or more EU Member States.

The person should have affinity with animal welfare and relate to the vision and mission of Eurogroup for Animals.

Practicalities

The position is a full-time fixed employee contract initially for 18 months (with possible extension – subject to renewal of funding). The position is based in Brussels or it demands to be in Brussels 50% of the time.

Salary range €3,811/mo to €5,611/mo depending on experience.
