As part of the horizontal team working for an ambitious and comprehensive revision of the farm animal welfare legislation, you are responsible for a cluster of Member States, acting as the primary point of contact, liaison and strategist for Eurogroup for Animals’ members based in these countries.

Eurogroup for Animals is the pan-European animal protection organisation which unites the voices of leading national and international organisations. We work to improve the welfare of as many animals as possible by leading and delivering coordinated advocacy and campaigns at European level. Eurogroup for Animals uses its knowledge and expertise to challenge EU decision makers and bring about positive change. By uniting our members and working together we magnify national activities to get our message across at European level. Eurogroup for Animals is a founding member of the World Federation for Animals (WFA), our global sister organisation.

Purpose of the role

As part of the horizontal team working for an ambitious and comprehensive revision of the farm animal welfare legislation, you are responsible for a cluster of Member States, acting as the primary point of contact, liaison and strategist for Eurogroup for Animals’ members based in these countries. We are currently seeking two Political Advisers to cover the following distinct regions:

  • Position 1: Nordic cluster (primarily Denmark, Sweden, and Finland);
  • Position 2: Southern European cluster (including Spain).

In close collaboration with our members, you carry out advocacy activities towards EU institutions related to your cluster of countries whilst executing our political strategy. You work closely with the communications and technical teams to deliver excellent lobby outcomes.

Primary responsibilities

Lobbying in Brussels

  • Contributing to deliver key outcomes throughout the European Commission’s modernisation process of the animal welfare legislation, specifically in relation to the welfare of farm animals;
  • Contribute to shaping our strategy to reach maximum results regarding the modernisation process, including identifying opportunities and threats;
  • Working with institutional stakeholders in the European Commission, European Parliament, Council and build alliances around our advocacy objectives; Providing institutional stakeholders with scientific advice and tailored policy solutions, whilst engineering and exploiting innovative opportunities to further our goals wherever possible;
  • Produce advocacy arguments to shape key debates on farm animal welfare, including on chicken and fish welfare; Draft political calls, communications and campaigns as well as voting recommendations, oral/written questions, lobby briefs, letters and other items for advocacy purposes;
  • Act as a representative for Eurogroup for Animals at political events, as needed.

Maximising the impact of our network

  • Maintain current knowledge of relevant EU-level policy decisions in the EU institutions and report regularly to the Eurogroup team and Member Organisations;
  • Serving as the primary point of contact for the member organisations that are active in a limited cluster of Member States:
    • For position 1: in this case primarily Nordic countries (Denmark, Sweden, Finland);
    • For position 2: in this case primarily Southern European countries (including Spain).
  • Shaping for each of these Member States a strategy to maximise impact of our members’ actions at EU level;
  • Involving and engaging these members to maximise pressure on institutional stakeholders.

Person specification

Essential skills & qualifications

  • A degree in political science, law or similar;
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience of EU public affairs, including in-depth knowledge of EU policy making and influencing processes;
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written);
  • Analytical skills;
  • Flexible and pragmatic;
  • Resilient nature and ability to handle stress and higher workload periods at times, as well as changing environments;
  • Affinity with animal welfare issues and commitment towards Eurogroup for Animals’ mission.

Desirable skills

  • Background in animal advocacy;
  • Fluency in one of the languages of the attributed cluster (e.g., Danish, Swedish, or Finnish for Position 1; Spanish for Position 2);
  • Advocacy experience in one of the countries within the specific cluster (Nordic or Southern European);
  • Knowledge of Salesforce and Project Management tools.

The person should have affinity with animal welfare and relate to the vision and mission of Eurogroup for Animals.

Practicalities

The position is a full-time permanent position (pending funding renewal in January 2028). The position is based in Brussels or it demands to be in Brussels 50% of the time.

Salary range €3,811/mo to €5,611/mo depending on experience.
