Required Qualifications & Preferred Skills

• Bachelor’s degree in Law (LL.B.) from a recognized university.
• Valid and active membership / license of the Iraqi Bar Association, entitling the holder to represent clients before the competent courts and administrative bodies. (Mandatory where the role includes court representation.)
• Minimum 3 years of professional legal experience with NGOs, including demonstrated practice before Iraqi courts and/or administrative bodies.
• Practical knowledge of Iraqi civil documentation procedures and of the Civil Status Affairs Directorate, Personal Status Courts, Directorate of Nationality and Residency Directorate.
• Excellent knowledge of the Iraqi legal system, in particular the Civil Status Law, the Personal Status Law, the Iraqi Nationality Law, and related regulations and administrative circulars.
• Sound understanding of international protection principles, human rights standards and the rights of displaced persons, returnees and refugees.
• Proven ability to draft legal documents to a professional standard: petitions, lawsuits, defences, appeals, affidavits and legal memoranda.
• Strong computer literacy
• Fluency in Arabic (spoken and written); working knowledge of English sufficient for reporting.
• Willingness and ability to travel regularly within the area of operation, including to camps and remote, hard-to-reach locations.
• Previous experience with an international or national NGO, UN agency or legal aid organization, particularly in protection or legal aid programming.
• Experience delivering awareness raising, training or community outreach sessions to diverse audiences.
