Introduction

The Portfolio is implemented by UNDP as part of its Country Programme and the United Nations Sustainable Development Framework and enables the provision of cohesive and integrated support to the Government of Sri Lanka.
The Legal Aid Commission (LAC) of Sri Lanka was established by Act No. 27 of 1978 with the main objective of providing free legal assistance to individuals unable to afford legal representation. The Commission was formed to address the need for a more accessible legal system, acknowledging that numerous citizens, particularly those from marginalized communities, encounter barriers to accessing justice due to financial limitations.
