Introduction
Sri Lanka is a signatory of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) since 1992 and article 6 of the Convention on General Measures for Conservation and Sustainable Use requests each Contracting Party to develop national strategies, plans or programmes for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity or adapt for this purpose existing strategies, plans or programmes which shall reflect, inter alia, the measures set out in this Convention relevant to the Contracting Party concerned. Further, it is requested to integrate, as far as possible and as appropriate the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity into relevant sectoral or cross-sectoral plans, programmes and policies. The National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) play a crucial role in addressing development challenges related to biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.
As a member of the CBD, Sri Lanka has submitted National Reports (NR) to the CBD since 1997. The 6th National Report covered the period from 2014 to 2018. Therefore,7th National Report which should be prepared for the period of 2019-2024 and submitted to the Convention on Biological Diversity on or before 28th February 2026.
