MAMA Bangladesh Launches Nationally to Reach 2 Million Moms by 2015!


Mobile Alliance for Maternal Action (MAMA) is excited to announce today the national launch of “Aponjon”, a mobile health service that delivers stage-based, vital health information to new and expectant mothers via their mobile phones in Bangladesh.  Meaning “the trusted one,” Aponjon is led by the MAMA Bangladesh team in Dhaka and reaches  23 districts,  trained more than 750 community health workers, and projected to reach two million moms by 2015.

The national launch event was held at the Osmani Memorial Hall, Abdul Ghani Road, Dhaka and well attended by special guests including MAMA Global Director, Kirsten Gagnaire, USAID Bangladesh Mission Director, Richard Greene, Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. A.F.M. Ruhal Haque, State Minister Dr. M. Mujibar Rahman Fakir, Senior Secretary for Health & Family Welfare, Government of Bangladesh and event chair, Mr. Mohammad Humayun Kabir along with members of the global health community.

Through the support of private-public partnerships, MAMA Bangladesh plans to empower more mothers and their families by providing evidence based information on everything from breastfeeding, caring for their babies, and when to go to the clinic. Thanks to the leadership of Dr. Ananya Raihan, Chief Technical Officer of MAMA Bangladesh and Executive Director of D.Net, MAMA continues to put the power of health in the hands of mothers and their family members.

MAMA is an innovative public-private partnership between USAID, Johnson & Johnson, the United Nations Foundation, mHealth Alliance, and BabyCenter. An initial investment of $10 million was made to create and strengthen programs in Bangladesh, India and South Africa.
